Formerly known as Marsh Lane
The low-lying areas around Bridge Road, Violet Road and Akenside Street were prone to severe flooding until the Rimrose Brook was culverted in the early 1950s. There is one recorded incident of a cyclist being drowned at the bottom of Violet Road/Akenside Street. The raised walk-way under the railway arches was constructed by the LUDC because of the dangers to the public caused by the flooding. Wellington Road is to the right of image
