Bridge Road circa 1890s
Formerly known as Marsh Lane
| The
low-lying areas around Bridge Road, Violet Road and Akenside Street
were prone to severe flooding until the Rimrose Brook was culverted
in the early 1950s. There is one recorded incident of a cyclist
being drowned at the bottom of Violet Road/Akenside Street. The
raised walk-way under the railway arches was constructed by the
LUDC because of the dangers to the public caused by the flooding.
